The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, Inc. is a Veterans non-profit corporation formed in Columbus, Ohio, on September 29, 1899, by Spanish–American War Veterans of the Seventeenth U. S. Infantry. It was Congressionally Chartered in 1936. Presently our membership exceeds two million men and women, with over four thousand VFW Post's Worldwide. There are 107 VFW Posts in Georgia. The VFW's membership is restricted to Veterans who have served Honorable overseas in America's wars and armed conflicts and are citizens of the United States. Our Gwinnett County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5255 was mustered in 1946, and has proudly entered its 75th year in Lawrenceville, GA. Our mission is to do our best to assist America's past and present Warriors and their Families. Our members proudly serve our Country and Community with distinction. Our roster includes community and business leaders, military personnel currently serving America actively throughout the world, civil service employees, and many other dedicated Veterans. The average age of our 800+ Members is 45, with 58 % having served in armed conflicts after the Vietnam era. We are a 501 (C) (19) non-Profit Corporation. We have been honored by the VFW National Headquarters 14 of the last 15 years as an All American Post”, putting us yearly in a select elite group of Posts worldwide. We have consistently been named to our VFW Dept of GA's “All State Team”, for our commitment to the VFW and our Community. Our Post has been designated "Community Post of the Year", a VFW highly esteemed Award, twice in the last nine years. Not only does the Post provide Veterans a place for social activities, it also is a Service Organization that actively supports many Veteran and Civic programs. Recognizing and awarding outstanding civil servants, educators, students, maintaining ongoing Veterans projects including the VA Hospital in Decatur, and special support projects for our troops stationed overseas in harm's way, are some of the ways that our Post keeps assisting Veterans and are Community. An essential component is the VFW Post Auxiliary, composed of spouses and qualifying close relatives of Veterans. Their presence and involvement is welcomed throughout Gwinnett County. Community commitment includes a variety of events with Veterans in residential and/or medical care facilities. They also hold other functions including sponsoring an annual children's Easter Egg hunt, a yearly childrens Christmas Party, and supplying DFACs children with filled book bags. Our Post Auxiliary is truly a vital part, and a supporting pillar, in all that makes us successful. Our Post hosts special events, participates in local parades and other military events, and has adopted the GA Army National Guard 48th BDE’s A Co, 1/121st INF unit, and their families. VFW Post 5255 sponsors BSA Troop 595, BSA Venture Crew 595, and BSA Venture Crew 12. The Scouts have their own camping area in the forest behind the Post. Our Boy Scout Troop 595 retires American Flags three times each year with a solemn and educational ceremony. They perform this honored duty with great pride. We encourage you to bring your worn Flags for Retirement and join the Ceremony. We have proudly welcomed Georgia Gwinnett College's Student Veterans Association (SVA) members to join with us and have opened our Post facility for their meetings and enjoyment. Our VFW Post Home is also available as a meeting place to other Military and Civic organizations. VFW Post 5255 also offers to the general public Bingo four (4) nights each week. The concession stand sells food and drinks. We have a Canteen in our a new 4,000 sq ft pavilion and a modern kitchen. Contact us if you are a Veteran and would like to join our Post.
